All profits to go towards Homes for Wells |
As Homes for Wells reaches its 5th anniversary we thought it was an opportune moment to summarise its developments and achievements.
Homes for Wells now owns 3 properties (one of which was bequeathed to us by the late Frank Dye), in addition we have tenants in 9 additional properties. Some of these properties we manage on behalf of the landlords and one allows us to retain the full amount of the rent to assist with covering our expenses.
Over the years we have accepted 103 applications for affordable housing and successfully provided accommodation for 15 of these applications.
We currently have 10 board members and 31 shareholders and after being Chairman since HfW started Peter Terrington has stood down and we now have a new Chair, Rosalie Monbiot. We must pass on our sincere thanks and appreciation to Peter for all his hard work and enthusiasm over the years and welcome Rosalie.
Our latest acquisitions, a cottage just off the harbour and a 2 bedroom bungalow on the southern side of the town are both currently undergoing refurbishment. If everything goes to plan we should have these 2 properties available at an affordable rent by the beginning of March. Homes for Wells has also been fortunate enough to be given a grant by the Tudor Trust to investigate potential development opportunities in Wells.
I would also like to add our thanks and appreciation to all those who send us donations – each one is totally unexpected and gratefully received. Donations and money raised through fundraising is ring-fenced for property purchase and development. We are fortunate enough to have the use of office space, 1 day a week, in the Sackhouse, free of charge, and many items of equipment we have had to acquire have either been donated or paid for through grants. We therefore manage to keep our overheads extremely low but as you can appreciate there are always the essential expenses of insurance, stationery and the wages for part time staff etc. For information on how you could help HfW please see the left hand column of this newsletter. Without your continued support we wouldn’t be where we are today – thank-you

Homes for Wells Chair – Rosalie Monbiot
"It is a great honour to be elected to the Chairmanship of Homes for Wells and I am very much looking forward to working with everyone in the community over the next few years. Peter Terrington will be a hard act to follow as he has driven the organisation forward in conjunction with his fellow Board members over the past four to five years. We currently have ten private properties housing tenants allocated by Homes for Wells, some of these properties we also manage. We have recently completed the purchase of a bungalow and are benefiting from the bequest by the late Frank Dye of his house in Jolly Sailor Yard. We should also be involved in the development at the Field Study Centre which we are much looking forward to.
My background was as a social worker and I spent 31 years on different Councils as a Councillor at all levels of Local Government. In South Oxfordshire I was Vice Chairman of the Housing Association which was formed when their Council houses were transferred away from the Council's control. When I moved to Norfolk eleven years ago I went onto the Board of Peddars Way Housing Association which was part of the Flagship Group. As such I worked with Flagship to get a development of fourteen units of affordable homes on the edge of Burnham Market. These have been a great success as they provide homes for families as well as for single men and the elderly. When I served on Norfolk County Council I was the Cabinet member for Children's Services and have maintained my interest in their education by serving as a Governor on different School bodies. I also chair the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award Scheme in West Norfolk and am a member of Burnham Market Parish Council.

FUNDRAISING
Our fundraising committee has recently held a very successful Curry evening with entertainment provided by tenor, Stephen Miles, and accompanied by Kathleen Wyatt. With the hall, and the majority of the guests, co-ordinating with the evenings black and white theme, a delicious curry was prepare and served by Robert MacNaughtan and his waitresses, ably assisted by Carla Phillips. The event raised almost £600 and the committee would like to thank all who attended.
Wells Christmas Tide was another successful event raising £200 for the society. The team ran a chocolate tombola stall and decorated a tree for the Christmas Tree exhibition.
The committee are now busy on plans for fundraising throughout 2012 which will include a fashion show in March, a Quiz evening in April and then on to Wells Carnival week which this year will be from Saturday 28th July until Sunday 5th August – the HfW fundraising team will be running their annual bring and buy sale and various other activities throughout the week.
At the beginning of January we also held an extremely successful evening at The Wells Crab House Café. Thanks must go to Phil, Lindsey and Steve for hosting the event and along with the raffle we raised in excess of £460.
Finally the Fundraising team is hoping to organise a Grand Draw and would like to hear from anyone who could donate a prize we are particularly looking for any holiday home owners or B & B owners who may be willing to donate a weekend/weeks holiday to HfW. If you think you could help please do not hesitate to contact us. |
